Mandatory on-line insurance for car registration -1 Mar 2010

February 22nd, 2010

RTA has asked insurance companies to link their computer systems with the Licensing Agency and make the policies available online. Most of the major insurance companies have already integrated their computer systems with the Licensing Agency – but check yours has or find another in good tiem befoire registration is due,

With the implementation of the new online system, a motorist will just pay the insurance fee at his respective insurance company and the company will send the information online to the RTA car registration offices.

The move will crackdown on motorists who insure their cars but to avoid heavy fines do not get those registered, and continue to drive with expired registration – There are more than 80,000 vehicles in Dubai with expired registrations

Note: The RTA has also recommended the federal government introduce heavy fines for unregistered vehicles and for delaying registration. Currently, there is a fine of Dh20 per month if the vehicle registration is delayed. Motorists get a one-month grace period to get their vehicle registered after the registration expiry date.

Kneber, Waledac and credential theft.

February 21st, 2010

In January Government and corporate networks around the world were invaded by the Kneber botnet, which has created what may be a criminal underground. Kneber steals credentials and money and is not stopped by traditional protection systems.

More than half the 75,000 infected systems were also compromised by the Waledac peer-to-peer botnet – a worm that is capable of collecting and forwarding password information. It’s also capable of receiving commands from a remote server, including to upgrade malware components or to send out information from the infected computer.
The Zeus line of credential-stealing viruses infect a victims’ computer and watch for the user to log in to a particular banking site or a site which has value. In some variations it even triggered itself to open a connection. Once a connection is made, it transmits credentials. Hackers then log in and steal from people’s bank accounts.

The scarier side is for businesses where many banks are not insured against loss coming from these attacks because there is a waiver of liability whenthe business network becomes infected. There are cases of a half-million dollars being stolen through these attacks and banks say ‘Sorry, not our problem’.

High speed broadband

February 21st, 2010

Last week, Google announced its plans to build an experimental fiber network that would offer gigabit-per-second broadband speeds to up to 500,000 U.S. homes. Google’s network won’t be the first to reach such speeds. There are other high bandwidth solutions internationally, in Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and Australia. Internet2, a nonprofit advanced networking consortium in the United States, has been experimenting with 10-gigabit connections for university researchers.

Large data files and applications through the cloud will require better broadband but routers set, up firewalls, and protocols also have to be up to the mark.
